Ecovillage at JP

in the Boston neighborhood
of Jamaica Plain, MA

The Ecovillage at JP is a proposed mixed-use residential and commercial development located just steps away from the Stony Brook T stop on the Orange line in Jamaica Plain (JP) Boston. This will be a unique development of ownership residential and commercial spaces. The developer, EcoDevelopments and future owners understand and appreciate the goals and objectives of sustainable community, sustainable business and development practices, and green construction through design, specifications and materials.

Approximately 60 units of housing and 10,000 square feet of both office and retail space will be constructed with energy efficient features, and with environmentally sensitive construction materials and construction practices. The proximity to stores and services in the neighborhood, as well as adjacency to the T station will reduce residents' dependence on cars for shopping and commuting to work.

The emphasis of the architectural design will focus on creating an environment of sustainable community. Residential spaces will be organized using the "Cohousing" model, which includes substantial access to a central club or "common" house, with space for communal meals and gatherings, as well as recreational and health equipment.

Generous gardens and open space will be developed to compliment that proximity to the gorgeous greens of the South West Corridor park, with gathering nodes and benches, pea patches and a playground.

Ecovillages include an emphasis on pedestrian living, and a de-emphasis on automobile dependence. Ecovillage means building green, using sustainable building practices, with a low impact on the environment. Reducing the need for auto usage is accomplished by increasing on-site work and play, and locating the ecovillage within easy pedestrian access to a full range of existing shopping, services and transportation.
