| ECOVILLAGE - Defined
Ecovillages are urban or rural communities of
people who strive to integrate a supportive social environment with
a low-impact, sustainable way of life. Typically, Ecovillages integrate
various aspects of ecological design and construction, alternative
energy, community-building practices, and much more.
Ecovillages typically build on various combinations
of three dimensions:
- Social/Community
- Ecological
- Cultural/Spiritual

|
Ecovillages include an emphasis on pedestrian living, and a de-emphasis
on the dependence on the automobile. Reducing the need for auto
usage is accomplished by increasing on-site work and play, and by
locating the Ecovillage within easy pedestrian access to a full
range of existing shopping, services, and transportation.
By encouraging residential
interation, intergenerational, and mixed income participants, and
by making available a variety of unit sizes, amenities levels, and
prices, Ecovillages encourage and provide opportunity for a richer
and more diverse social environment.
